Studio Musings - when life gets in the way of art

"Art is not a thing; it's a doing. It's a way of life" ~ Georgia O'Keeffe.

Hey creative friend!

Here we are another two weeks later and life just seems to find a way to get in the way of my creative time. I know I am not alone in this struggle, when I chat with friends and students it seems we are all in the same boat. Time seems to slip away faster these days.

Sometimes making time for art is as easy as managing our time better or saying 'no' to unimportant time-wasting activities or we can just simply get off the 'doom scroll' and get out our art supplies. But sometimes, like with me the last 10 days, life stops you in your tracks. No one plans to get sick but that is one of the times when you just have to slow down, take care of yourself and give yourself grace for not doing anything else.

So, whether you have been sick or just too bogged down with work or 'doom scrolling' because you are just that worn out, give yourself grace - you are doing the best you can.

How do we get back into a creative habit when life got in the way? Well, you just start... in my case when the mountain of tissues started to get smaller and I was able to hold anything in my hand long enough without coughing!

The joy of life is that each day brings a new sunrise and a new opportunity to start again! So just start, dust off your favourite art supplies and just play, make a mess and enjoy the process. And give yourself grace if it turns out to be a yucky page.

So, let's talk about those ugly, yucky pages that we get so annoyed with. Always remember that the benefit of a creative activity is in the process and not the end result. But I know we will feel a little better if the page does turn out half decent, it gives us a little more confidence to do it again.

This month during our Art Journaling workshop I am going to show you how to save those yucky pages from the bin and give them a make-over! Let me show you how to revive those 'not-so-pretty' pages and turn them into a piece of art you can be proud of.

Get creative with me:

Join me for Art Journaling this month and we are going to learn reverse painting or negative painting to revive a messy/ugly page.

"Creativity doesn't wait for that perfect moment. It fashions its own perfect moments out of ordinary ones" ~ Bruce Garrabrandt Hey creative friend! Quick question: When was the last time you sat down to create just... because? Most of us stop making art the moment it starts feeling like "work" or—even worse—when we realize we aren’t the next Picasso. We buy the fancy supplies, stare at the scary white paper, and then go back to scrolling on our phones because it’s easier than being a...

"It takes practice, and the conscious building of daily ritual" ~ Julia Cameron Hey creative friend! We are nearing the end of August but it seems Winter is still holding fast and Spring is slow to emerge. I am loving the few days of sunshine in-between all the rain, I try and get outside with my on-the-go art kit as much as possible. One thing my mini art kit has helped with, is to hone in on a specific art medium and improve my skills on that one medium. The biggest issue I had was having...

"The bad news is time flies. The good news is you're the pilot" ~ Michael Altshuler. Hey creative friend! It's been a hot minute since my last newsletter. I did have technical difficulties and was unable to connect to send out any newsletters. But all is fixed and we can continue our discussion on how to identify time wasting activities and how you can redirect that time into a creative activity. I will also share my practical tips for managing some of these activities that are necessary but...
