🌿 A 5-minute colour hunt in your garden (No painting experience needed!)

"Nature always wears the colors of the spirit." ~ Ralph Waldo Emerson

Hi Reader,

When we think about practicing our art, we often imagine sitting down at a pristine desk with all our paints laid out. But one of my absolute favourite ways to sharpen my artist’s eye doesn’t require setting up a full studio at all.

It starts simply by stepping outside into the garden or taking a slow walk down your street.

In our Watercolour Colour Theory Workshop, we do a wonderful exercise where we take a little isolated viewing card outside to isolate tiny swatches of color from nature. It’s amazing what happens when you stop looking at a leaf as just "green" and start seeing the subtle golden undertones, the deep shadows, or the tiny pops of unexpected reddish-brown along the edges!

Welcome to all the new subscribers, if you are on this list you attended one of my workshops or signed up on my website and we are now art friends - stick around we are going to have so much fun together!

🔍 Your 5-Minute Creative Challenge This Week:

You don't need a full afternoon—just five quiet minutes today:

  1. Step Outside: Walk into your garden, porch, or nearby park with your morning tea.
  2. Isolate a Palette: Look closely at a flower, a piece of bark, or an autumn-tipped leaf. Try to spot 3 distinct colors living together in that single object.
  3. Paint a Quick Bookmark: Grab a scrap piece of watercolour paper and dab just a few dots or stripes of those three colours next to each other.

Suddenly, without overthinking a complex scene, you’ve created a custom, nature-inspired colour palette bookmark that feels completely harmonious and unique!

"Creativity is a habit, and the best creativity is the result of good work habits." ~ Twyla Tharp Hi Reader, With no workshops on the studio calendar for the next two weekends, my studio table looks a little different. Instead of preparing workbooks and setting out water jars, I’ve been reflecting on how easy it is for creative play to get pushed to the very bottom of our busy to-do lists. How often do you find yourself thinking, "I’d love to paint today, but I don't have two hours to clear...

"Creativity doesn't wait for that perfect moment. It fashions its own perfect moments out of ordinary ones" ~ Bruce Garrabrandt Hey creative friend! Quick question: When was the last time you sat down to create just... because? Most of us stop making art the moment it starts feeling like "work" or—even worse—when we realize we aren’t the next Picasso. We buy the fancy supplies, stare at the scary white paper, and then go back to scrolling on our phones because it’s easier than being a...

"It takes practice, and the conscious building of daily ritual" ~ Julia Cameron Hey creative friend! We are nearing the end of August but it seems Winter is still holding fast and Spring is slow to emerge. I am loving the few days of sunshine in-between all the rain, I try and get outside with my on-the-go art kit as much as possible. One thing my mini art kit has helped with, is to hone in on a specific art medium and improve my skills on that one medium. The biggest issue I had was having...
