Studio Musings - In a world of AI be a creative rebel...

"Creativity is a characteristic given to all human beings at birth" ~ Abraham Maslow.

Hey creative friend!

I don't know how you personally feel about AI but I have always been a bit apprehensive about it and to this day I am not a fan. When AI started making art and social media was all a buzz with how AI is going to replace artists... yeah the rebel was born

Don't get me wrong, it can be a useful tool but just like all smart devices too much of it can impact your mental health. And your mental health matters because you matter and art (actual physical art) is a very powerful healing practice. So, less AI more art please.

It is no secret that I am very passionate about the process of making art. I talk about it in my workshops, I write about it in my newsletters, I get on my soapbox any chance I get.

So, when I received an email from skillshare this week hi-lighting the LIONS State of Creativity report, my inner anti-AI-rebel did a little happy dance with a sign saying: I told you so...

The takeaway from the report - and I copy from their email:

  • creativity isn’t optional—it’s essential for navigating rapid change. As AI continues to reshape industries, bold, human-led creativity is what will drive connection, innovation, and long-term success
  • In an age of AI and automation, human creativity remains the key differentiator—driving empathy, innovation, and emotional impact.

Yeah, I am going to leave it there. Thank you for coming to my TED talk. LOL

I hope you are a little inspired to get creative this week. Here are three prompts to get your creativity going:

  • Take a walk in your neighbourhood or a park and take close-up pictures of textures - tree bark, cracks in paving, flowers, anthills etc. This exercise will get you off the couch and into nature where you will notice the little things.
  • Take the first prompt a little further and take a piece of paper and a crayon with you on your walk, make crayon rubbings of the textures you find. These pieces of paper can become fun collage elements in a journal and the crayon will create a fun resist effect with watercolour paints.
  • Too wet and rainy outside? Grab some pretty papers and try your hand at origami. Mr T and I had fun yesterday with basic origami designs. The fun part is that you can stick it in a journal or make home decor or even jewellery out of your finished piece - Functional art, what's not to love

Would you like to get out of the house and nurture your creativity with like-minded creatives? Join me for a workshop out in the country-ish side of Perth.

"Creativity doesn't wait for that perfect moment. It fashions its own perfect moments out of ordinary ones" ~ Bruce Garrabrandt Hey creative friend! Quick question: When was the last time you sat down to create just... because? Most of us stop making art the moment it starts feeling like "work" or—even worse—when we realize we aren’t the next Picasso. We buy the fancy supplies, stare at the scary white paper, and then go back to scrolling on our phones because it’s easier than being a...

"It takes practice, and the conscious building of daily ritual" ~ Julia Cameron Hey creative friend! We are nearing the end of August but it seems Winter is still holding fast and Spring is slow to emerge. I am loving the few days of sunshine in-between all the rain, I try and get outside with my on-the-go art kit as much as possible. One thing my mini art kit has helped with, is to hone in on a specific art medium and improve my skills on that one medium. The biggest issue I had was having...

"The bad news is time flies. The good news is you're the pilot" ~ Michael Altshuler. Hey creative friend! It's been a hot minute since my last newsletter. I did have technical difficulties and was unable to connect to send out any newsletters. But all is fixed and we can continue our discussion on how to identify time wasting activities and how you can redirect that time into a creative activity. I will also share my practical tips for managing some of these activities that are necessary but...
